[Martijn]

[Delft University of Tehcnology]

I am a Full Professor of Complex Systems Design, and the Head of the Multi-Actor Systems Department - Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management - Delft University of Technology. I'm also a member of the Section Systems Engineering, and the research school SIKS.

Research

My research focuses on the understanding and management of complex emergent behavior in socio-technical systems such as the power grid, sensor networks or road networks. I study system aspects, such as robustness, resilience, efficiency and reliability, but also other user related aspects such as empowerment, security and privacy. I believe that, in general, the really interesting research challenges can only be solved by truly multidisciplinary research that combines expertise from researchers with a variety of academic backgrounds.

Several application domains are central in my research: the power grid and energy domain, distributed networks such as cloud computing and sensor networks as well as other networked systems such as road networks and supply chains. The societal impact of trust and privacy and security is studied in a wide context, ranging from agent based systems to cloud and grid computing.

  • Papers (type, chronological), Pure profile, Scopus profile and Google Scholar profile
  • I serve on several program committees
  • A recording of my inaugural lecture "Design for adaptation and emergence in complex systems" can be found here.
  • Research interests:
    • Emergent behavior of Socio-technical Systems
